UK500 – Birding in the fast Lane is a lively, entertaining and informative account of the author’s venture to record 500 bird species found in Britain and Ireland. And this before his 30th birthday. It took him over 17 years. His own photographs and splendid paintings and drawings complement his birdwatching story. He recounts car crashes, stormy sea crossings, plane convoys and even a coastguard rescue during his travels in pursuit of rare birds.

James Hanlon chronicles his adventures trying to see 500 bird species in Britain before he turns 30 in this often funny, sometimes scary and occasionally disturbing twitcher’s diary.
Birdwatch Magazine
This is one for all keen twitchers or anyone who likes to read about twitching adventures. For many birdwatching is a peaceful activity, taken at a slowish stroll rather than in the fast lane, but this lively and interesting account presents a very different view.
Bird Watching Magazine
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wholeheartedly recommend it. It’s great to see some nice field notes and it is evident that James is a talented artist and photographer; the Masked Shrike L. nubicus illustration in particular is superb.
