Inspiration Through Nature

British and Irish Butterflies

Adrian Riley

The complete Identification, Field and Site Guide to the Species, Subspecies and Forms.

A wonderful butterfly book, the first to cover all the adult forms, including subspecies, in the British Isles. It provides clear directions and field tips on where to find them (incl. OS grid references), as well as details of identification and behaviour, and is complemented with stunning colour photographs of living specimen of all the taxa. It represents a lifetime of study and observation by the author, former chief lepidoptera taxonomist at Rothamsted Research, of these fascinating insects and will aid in the location and identification of all the adult forms of the butterflies. In addition, the history, ecology and behaviour (e.g. flight, territorial and roosting) of many of the species is briefly, but very interestingly, detailed, along with description of basic habitat types, phenological tables, a list of food plants and their scientific names, and citation of the scientific literature, more especially that relating to classification of the sub-specific forms. The volume is fully indexed.

Reviews

This is the best and most interesting butterfly book I have read for a while covering not only the main species but also sub species, the places and times where and when they fly, ample accurate photographs of the detail upper and under sides of wings to aid identification and actual sites with directions.

I consider this to be one of the great works of the decade in its field, and am sure it will be considered a reference work for many years to come alongside the works of Frohawk, South and Ford.

UK Butterflies

This work represents the publication of the life work of the author and, perhaps surprisingly, is the first time that all 59 breeding British and Irish species and their subspecies have been collated into one invaluable field guide. This book can be thoroughly recommended to a diverse audience, from the amateur lepidopterist to the professional ecologist.

The Biologist

Adrian Riley has compiled a great butterfly guide here, treating them at subspecies level in detail.
