Arrivals and Rivals – A duel for the winning bird

Adrian Riley

book cover for Arrivals and Rivals

In the UK, birdwatching has been a popular pastime for a long time.  There are about 3 million people birdwatching every year.  Recently this activity has experienced a resurgence, especially amongst younger generations, with their rising interest in nature and the environment.  It is also a perfect outdoor activity to help with mental well-being.

Arrivals and Rivals gives an insight into competitive birdwatching or ‘twitching’. It is all about finding as many different bird species as possible within a year. This is also called year-listing. Back in 2002, Adrian Riley, the author, has attempted to do just this whilst beating any other obsessive birders, one in particular, to become the nationally recognised ‘Birder of the Year’. This needs passion, dedication and endurance as you will be constantly on the move following announcements of the ‘Rare Bird Alert’ news group. They provide instant and reliable birdnews via your mobile.

Arrivals and Rivals is a classic tale, set amidst the beautiful British countryside. It involves a rivalry so strong that all else is forgotten – save the birds and the desire to see them, despite the many costs both mentally and physically.

Reviews

Those who are motivated by the challenge of hard twitching will immediately identify with the emotions experienced by Adrian Riley in his quest to see a massive number of birds in Britain & Ireland in 2002. Twitching is full of highs and lows and this book focuses much on the emotional experiences of year-listing rather than detailed discussions about the birds seen. If you are into twitching, then you’ll probably enjoy this book, which is an easy read and short enough to get through on a twitch from the Midlands to the Scillies or Shetland (if you are not the driver!).

British Birds Magazine

They may look harmless (if a bit mad) but as a new book reveals, the world of twitchers is full of dishonesty, bitter rivalry…and dark threats. (Review of first edition).

Daily Mail

Never dull and very affordable, it is sure to be a book that many will be keen to read (review of 1st edition).

Birdwatch Magazine

I do not pretend to finish every book I review… some are turgid or over wordy; this is well crafted and edited. It is about the man and the quest and in the end stood up aside from its subject matter and I enjoyed being allowed to peep through the curtain into this world. It is a good-natured book that reflects well on the writer.

Fatbirder

While the romance of Adrian’s quest is highly readable, it is the Rivals part that makes it so addictive.
