Inspiration Through Nature

The Boy and the Trout

Richard ffrench-Constant

Illustrated by Laura Crees

This delightful fishing book for kids illustrates the story with delicate water colours. It aims to encourage early primary school kids to follow Harry’s lead and go fishing whilst meanwhile enjoying the outdoors.

Harry is a boy with a passion for fishing. He visits his favourite place, a crystal-clear chalk stream where kingfishers dart and minnows abound. He is there to catch a trout. Will he be lucky? It all turns into a small adventure, involving meeting lots of animals and other wildlife on the way.

This is a truly lovely read that feels gentle, warm, and full of charm… *****

My children love this book particularly my little boy who adores anything linked with nature, it was educational whilst also being relatable via the lighthearted story.  *****

‘The Boy and The Trout’ is a lovely, gentle story, about a boy’s day fishing for trout.  The story is nicely written, and is relaxing to read and to listen to.  The simple, muted illustrations also have a calming effect.  There’s a lot to learn from this book too, as it has labelled pictures of different wildlife throughout – perfect for nature lover’s like my son. Overall this is a charming little book – a nice read for winding down at bedtime. ****

‘The Boy and the Trout’ is a simple story and picture book aimed at 4-7 year olds, beautifully illustrated throughout with coloured line drawings by Laura Crees. Telling the story of a young boy, Harry, the book captures the magic of discovery of a river, its wildlife and the excitements of a fishing trip. A great way to inspire children to get out and enjoy the great outdoors

The Wild Trout Trust

The illustrations, which play an essential role in any book for this age group, are excellent throughout. A mixture of sketches and watercolours depict waterside scenes, wildlife studies and snapshots of the action. The watercolours have a dreamy quality which evokes the clear running water of a stream superbly; the pace, turbulence and movement of the water captured so well. A key message from this book is that patience can bring its rewards… Another good message for a children’s book is that, once Harry finally lands his first trout he quickly unhooks it, admires it for a moment and then releases it back into the stream. So, does this book succeed in meeting its brief as an inspiration to children? I think so.
