Brambleby Books

Inspiration Through Nature

About Us

Founded in Harpenden, Hertfordshire in 2002, Brambleby Books is a British independent publisher dedicated to nature-inspired publishing. With a deep appreciation for life’s diversity, our guiding motto is: Inspiration Through Nature.

We specialise in books about the natural world, offering unique perspectives that bridge science, poetry, and environmental art. Our titles reflect a strong commitment to natural history literature, contemporary environmental authors, and growing awareness of today’s ecological challenges.

Led by professional biologists and experienced world travellers Drs Hugh and Nicola Loxdale, Brambleby Books continues to publish beautifully illustrated works for readers who care about nature, science, and sustainable living.

The Team

Brambleby Books was founded by two professional biologists, Drs Hugh and Nicola Loxdale, both with wide experience in scientific writing and editing. They share a great love of the natural world and the countryside. Hugh and Nicola have travelled extensively throughout the world, both in their professional capacity and during holidays, visiting a diverse range of countries, temperate and tropical, and observing the wildlife of these regions.

Nicola Loxdale

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Nicola studied biology at the University of Tuebingen before moving to England to study nematology at Silwood Park, Ascot, and East Malling, Kent. She then did postdocs for 5 years at USA, prior to starting a new project at Rothamsted Research Station where she met Hugh. On leaving Rothamsted she founded Brambleby Books with Hugh and now acts as MD of the company.

Hugh David Loxdale

Hugh was born in Horley, Surrey and has been interested in insects since an early age. He started work in the Entomology Department at Rothamsted Research Station in Harpenden aged 18 and spent most of his career there as a research scientist working on aphids and their wasp parasites. Thereafter, he worked for a further 6 years in Germany at the University of Jena to continue his research. Since retirement, he has fulfilled the role of Editor-in-Chief at Brambleby Books.

Tanya Warren

Tanya is Creative Director at Creatix Design Services and joined Brambleby Books on a freelance basis in 2005. Since then she has designed all Brambleby book covers and is in charge for the layout of most books.
